XV ELAFOT & 1st LatASP MEETING

23–26 Oct/2023

Maresias Beach, Brazil

The Encuentros Latinoamericanos de Fotoquímica y Fotobiología (ELAFOT) is a biannual meeting for photochemical and photobiological researchers in Latin America. The event aims to present cutting-edge scientific work, share the latest research findings, facilitate idea exchange, initiate collaborations, and strengthen the scientific interactions between young researchers and senior experts.

ELAFOT es una oportunidad para conversar sobre fotociencia con personas interesantes, disfrutando de los escenarios más bellos de América Latina.

Brief History of ELAFOT

ELAFOT began in August 1982 with the Primer Encuentro Latinoamericano de Fotoquímica, organized by Eduardo Lissi and his group at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. An article detailing the history of the first meetings was written by John Simon and Silvia Braslavsky (Photochem. Photobiol. 2005, 81, 768-770, PDF).

The XV ELAFOT will take place together with the first LatASP Meeting in October 2023 in Brazil.

ELAFOT-LatASP Meeting: Advancing the Frontiers of Photoscience

ELAFOT is a scientific meeting committed to advancing the fields of photoscience by featuring innovative research, promoting thoughtful discussions, and facilitating professional interactions among scientists across various career stages.

Owing to the significant involvement of Latin American scientists in the American Society for Photobiology, a Latin American Society for Photobiology has been established within the ASP. The inaugural LatASP Meeting will be held in conjunction with the XV ELAFOT, featuring esteemed Pan American scientists as invited speakers.

The conference, scheduled for four days, will be held at a beach location. Attendees will have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and form new connections, fostering camaraderie and establishing collaborations. In addition to distinguished presentations, the event includes time for poster sessions. The schedule also incorporates afternoon leisure time and communal meals, offering informal networking opportunities.

Main topics

Photochemical and Photophysical Processes: Light-induced processes in gas, liquid, and solid phases, molecular photochemistry (organic, inorganic, supramolecular), photophysical methods, photocatalysis, and photoelectrochemistry.

Solar and Environmental Photochemistry: Solar energy conversion, sun exposure, UV, visible light, and photoprotection.

Photobiology and Medical Applications: Photosynthesis, quantum biology, photoreceptors, visual pigments, photo-chronobiology, photomorphogenesis, photosensitization, photomedicine, photobiomodulation, UV inactivation of microorganisms and viruses, photodynamic inactivation, and photodynamic therapy.

Advanced Phototechniques and Materials: Photofabrication, photonics, and nanotechnology.
